To move a chest in Stardew Valley you must first empty all of the items out of the chest. After the chest is empty simply use any of your tools such as the axe, hoe, or pick on the chest. This will allow you to pick up the chest item and place it wherever you want.
I will go into detail on doing this with pictures if anyone is still having trouble.
Emptying the chest
You must get all of the items out of the chest before it can be moved. To do this, open up the chest with whatever way you have to on your version of the game. Once the chest is opened, move all of the items either into your inventory, or onto the ground temporarily. Don’t worry, you can pick these items up in a moment once you have found a better spot for your chest.
Pick up the empty chest
Once you have emptied out your chest, grab one of your starting tools out. The quality of your tool doesn’t matter, all of them will get it up in one hit. Once you have a handy tool like the axe, take a swing directly at the chest. That will make the chest turn back into an item that can be picked up and if you have the space in your backpack, it will be automatically added there.
Now that you have reacquired your chest, simply select it in your inventory to put it back down. Hopefully this time you will put it in a more permanent spot!
