Buying a house is pretty straightforward in Kenshi. First you have to find a house that is available for sale in a town, select the house and click the buy option on the bottom left of the screen. Read on to find out more.
Why buy a house in town?
Every now and then when you’re travelling through towns in Kenshi you may want to consider buying a small place to use as a base. Buying a building in town is a fantastic choice in the beginning of the game as it gives you a place to rest and recover for a while. You have the option of building your own buildings out in the wild, and establishing your own base but that is rather difficult. Not only will you have to find the materials for the building and build your house from scratch, buy you will have to deal with being constantly raided, taxed and depending where you live hassled by the local faction. If you plan to set up your own base in the desert you will find yourself having to pay a hefty tax fee to the United Cities unless you want to get on their bad side.
Buying a house in town is a really safe option for the beginning and will help reduce annoying raids and pesky fauna stealing your crops.
Finding a house for sale in Kenshi
Not all buildings are available to buy in Kenshi. Head into a town and left-click on a building to select it. You will be able to see in the bottom left corner of your screen whether the building is for sale or not. See the image below.
There will more often than not, be at least one building for sale in each town. The price of the building will only depend on what type of building it is. For example the Old Storm House as seen in the image above, will cost 16,000 cats to purchase. There are smaller buildings available to start with costing somewhere from 4,000 to 5,000 cats.
How to buy the house
Now that you’ve found a house that is on the market it is time to buy! Click the green button on the bottom left that has the price as seen in the image above. You will then see the following promt:
You do still have a chance at this point to back out and save your cats. If you select yes and have the necessary amount of cats in your squad then you will officially own the building! Congratulations! You now have your own little piece of Kenshi where you can rest and recover.
What can you do with the town building in Kenshi?
Once you own a building in town you will be able to walk inside it. You can lock or unlock the doors by using the right click menu on the doors. You can lock the doors without the need of a character going to the door manually by selecting the ‘lock door’ button on the bottom left of the UI, once you have the building selected.
You can customize your house and put down furniture by opening the build menu. You can open the build menu by pressing the button to the right of the part of the UI which shows your amount of cats. You can throw down some beds to sleep on for quicker recovery times in Kenshi. You can put down production machines like the all-important research table and also crafting stations.
You can also put down containers to store your hard earned loot so your character doesn’t have to lug them around everywhere across the dangerous map of Kenshi.
