At the start of massive DnD based RPG players will find themselves aboard a mind flayer ship. Here you will find the first two possible companions that can be recruited, Lae’zel and Shadowheart. This guide will show you how to easily free Shadowheart from the Mind Flayer Pod she finds herself trapped in.
How to Free Shadowheart from the Mind Flayer Pod
Approaching the pod and interacting with it will engage a conversation with Shadowheart in which she will start speaking with you. She will demand you open the lid of the pod. There are a number of ways in which you can open the pod. Three of these involve using the console beside her pod. One option is class-based and doesn’t require the console:
- Rip the pod open: This is a option only available to characters with the Barbarian class. This will initiate a skill check based on Strength.
- Pass an Arcana check: Wizard/Warlock characters can use their arcana ability to pass a check on the pod without needing any items to open it.
- Use the Eldrich Rune to open the pod: There is an item in a nearby room wich allows the player to very easily open the pod regardless of their class.
Ripping Shadowheart’s Pod Open
This is perhaps the most classic Barbarian thing to do in this situation. Upon your first interaction with Shadowheart and the pod itself, you can simply attempt to use your strength to rip the pod open.
To attempt this simply choose the option; Grip the pod’s lid and pull. At first this will fail and nothing will happen. you will then have a new choice presented within the conversation reading; (Barbarian)(Strength) Don’t give up. Tear this thing open. Selecting this will initiate a strength check with the difficulty class of 10. Your strength modifier will be added to your roll. (Maximum of +3 at this point in the game).
Succeed this check and your character will literally just rid the lid off the mind flayer pod and Shadowheart will be freed and in your gratitude.
Freeing Shadowheart Using Wizard or Warlock
Barbarians are not the only class with the ability to open Shadowheart’s pod in a unique war. Both the Wizard and Warlock classes have their own ways. To open the pod with either of these characters, the player can interact with the console beside the pod. These two classes have particular insight on things magical.
You can then attempt to pass an Arcana check, (Difficulty class 10) to attempt to operate the pod. After passing this check you can use the Illithid inside your brain to operate the pod and release Shadowheart.
Open the Mind Flayer Pod with and Item
The easiest and ‘fool-proof’ way to open the pod is by using a special item. In the room connected to the one with Shadowheart’s pod, you will find a certain rune that can be inserted into the console. This is called the Eldrich Rune. To get this rune do the following:
– Proceed into the room to the East of the Mind Flayer Pod room.
– Loot the body at the very back of the room. It is called Dead Thrall.
– Take the rune to the console and follow the options to release the pod
This option requires you to to pass a 2 check using your Ithillid powers.
