How to Change the Difficulty Mid-Game in Baldur’s Gate 3

Finding Baldur’s Gate 3 too difficult for your liking? Maybe you’re cruising through the battles looking for challenge? We will show you how to change the difficulty of the game, regardless of where you are in your playthrough.

How to Change the Difficulty in Baldur’s Gate 3

Changing the difficulty is very simple when you’re playing the game. You can change the difficulty higher or lower at any point in your playthrough. To change the game’s difficulty simply press the Escape key to open the game’s pause menu. Now, select the option titled Difficulty. This brings you to a screen with the game’s three difficulty modes. Select your desired difficulty and click the Confirm button.

There are three different difficulty modes for you to choose from. These are:

  • Explorer (Easiest): Explorer is recommended for people who aren’t huge on RPG games, don’t feel like calculating each of their builds or gamers that just want to have fun and experience the story without much or a challenge. The player characters will have a larger health pool at this difficulty.
  • Balanced (Medium or Standard): Balanced is the game’s standard difficulty. Don’t think that this means the game will be a pushover! You will still have a difficult time if trying to blast through the game, not collecting enough experience to fight the next enemy.
  • Tactician: (Hard): Tactician mode is the hardest difficulty in Baldurs Gate 3. In this difficulty, the AI will have more health and a few more spells at their disposal compared to the previous levels. For example playing with a friend on tactician for the first time I was surprised to see the Intellect Devourers at the start of the game gain a fairly strong ranged spell on tactician mode.

Whatever you pick don’t be too careful to try something out. The difficulty can be changed at any point in the game so don’t feel stressed about bumping up the difficulty and then getting stuck.
