Where Can the Pufferfish Be Found/Caught?
You can catch a Pufferfish in the ocean at the south of the town. The pufferfish can be caught only during the season of Summer during the middle of the day. The exact times you can catch a Pufferfish here are between 12pm (Midday) and 4pm. The weather will also need to be sunny in order for you to catch a Pufferfish. They won’t appear in the rain.
The Pufferfish can also be caught at Ginger Island at any time of the year. As with most fish, Ginger Island makes it possible to catch almost any fish at any time of the year. The only place you cannot catch a pufferfish on Ginger Island is on the North of the Island.
Buying a Pufferfish in Stardew Valley
If you aren’t feeling up to the fishing challenge of catching a Pufferfish, there are two ways to obtain one without fishing. That being said, you will need a little luck. Pufferfish can be found randomly in trash cans. If you have a little gold, you might also want to try your luck buying one from the Travelling Cart.

There is one way that you can obtain any fish, regardless of season. That is by using an item called Magic Bait. Magic Bait allows you to catch any type of fish regardless of season or weather. You will still need to fish in the same location though. In this case, the ocean.
You can purchase Magic Bait in Qi’s Walnut Room on Ginger Island. (this is unlocked after exchanging 100 golden walnuts to enter the room.) You can also purchase a recipe to craft your own magic bait from 1 radioactive ore and 3 bug meat. This will net you 5 magic bait.
