How to Climb Fences and Walls in Project Zomboid

There are climbable and non-climbable walls in Project Zomboid. Many of the walls are able to be scaled either to evade your followers or traverse the world. To climb over a large wall, face the wall and press the E key. Your character will climb over the wall. They may fail to climb over the wall if they are exhausted. You can also climb over small fences and railings. This is also done with the E key. For the smaller fences, your character will automatically climb over them is they are in jog mode. This mode is entered by holding the SHIFT key down whilst moving. The character will also attempt to jump over small fences while in sprint mode (ALT) but this has a high chance of injury and is not recommended.

To climb over a fence or wall when using an Xbox gamepad use the A button when facing the structure. Using a DS4 controller you’ll need to press the X button. Most fences that you see in the game can be scaled. Basically all of the smaller fences can be scaled and a lot of the larger ones. Just press the E key near a fence and give them a try!

Climbing Over Smaller Fences

There are in general 2 different types of fences in the game. You have the small fences and the larger ones. The small fences are generally found outside houses and fence in a yard. These smaller fences can be scaled by walking up to them and pressing the E key as seen above. An alternate way to climb over these fences is just by jogging at them. As you can read in this guide for moving faster in Project Zomboid there are two different speeds you can run. You can run at a jogging pace or at full sprint. When you are jogging your character will scale these smaller fences automatically. There isn’t any danger jogging at these smaller fences and scaling them using this method.

There is a danger however, trying to scale these fences at full sprint. There is a good chance that your character will pretty much fall on their face when jumping a fence at full sprint. This will more than likely lead to an injury to your character. It is best just to slow down when approaching. At least to a job.

Climbing Larger Fences

There is another the of fence in Project Zomboid. Often you will see larger fences and walls around the world. These can also be scaled. Climbing over the large walls generally poses a bit of a risk. Often you aren’t able to see the other side of a large wall. This can leave you climbing into a blind spot. Only climb over a non-see-through fence if you know what if on the other side. Alternatively, you may just have no other choice but to risk it.

Larger fences can be scaled using the E key. Success is not always guaranteed.

These large chain-link fences can be scaled as well. The great thing about this is that zombies won’t be able to climb over them at all. They will have to walk around to another opening to get in. There are some large fences that the player won’t be able to scale. Some examples are the large iron fences in the ‘richer’ neighborhoods and fences with visible barbed wire. Be aware that success is not always guaranteed when climbing these fences. Your base chance of climbing over the fence successfully is generally 100%. If you character is panicked or injured there is a chance they won’t be able to climb the fence successfully on the first try. Be aware of this if you are cornered.
