How to Spawn Items in Project Zomboid

Now that Project Zomboid’s multiplayer release is finally here, server admins are busy keeping players under control. One of the best things about being an admin or the owner of the server is the ability to spawn in items for giveaways or other events. If you’ve been around the map and just can’t find a sledgehammer then you may want to just bring one in with admin powers.

Luckily, the developers have made this task very simple to do in Project Zomboid. You can spawn items in through in in-game items menu. This guide will show you how to get your hands on any item in the game, for whatever reason you have.

Getting Admin Rights/Debug Mode

To begin with, you are going to have to have the rights to spawn items in. Depending on your game mode you will need to be in either debug mode to get the menu in single player, or simply admin access for multiplayer servers. Either way you have these powers, the item menu is the same.

I have written guides on how to get into debug mode if you’re playing single player, or how to give yourself admin access, if you’re on your own multiplayer server. First make sure you have the correct access depending on your game before you continue.

Project Zomboid Build 41

Now that you have the necessary powers to get it, you spawn items through the Item Menu. To do this with Admin Powers on a multiplayer server follow these steps:

  1. Open up the admin panel with the icon at the left of the screen
  2. Select the Items List Viewer
  3. Search for the item you wish to add to your inventory in the Name filter
  4. Select either Add 1, Add 2, Add 5 or pick any multiple you want with the Add Multiple… button
  5. Find your spawned item in your character’s main inventory!

Note that this is how you will get to the item spawn menu only when you are playing multiplayer on a server. To open up the items menu in single player, you will have to enter the Debug menu. This will be explained in brief in the next section.

How to Spawn in Items in Project Zomboid Single Player

Note that there is no admin panel available when playing single player in Project Zomboid. This is because there is no actual public server running the game. The only way to access the item menu when playing single player (or split screen) is by running the game in debug mode. You can see again how to do that here.

Now that we have launched the game in Debug mode, you have access to the debug mode panel. This is where the items menu is located. To spawn items in Single player follow these steps:

  1. Open up the Debug panel on the left of the screen. (The icon that looks like a mosquito)
  2. Select the option Items List
  3. Find the item you want to spawn by searching under the Name filter
  4. Select how many you want to add
  5. Find the item in your character’s main inventory

So that is the only way you can spawn in items using the item panel in Project Zomboid. Note that debug mode can also be used in your server as well. So realistically you can get to the items list in 2 different ways if you are the server host. Most servers won’t allow you to join the server if you are on debug mode.

This is done obviously to stop people from being able to cheat in the game. If you are having trouble joining servers because of debug mode, you will have to go back into your launch settings and disable debug mode.
