How to Get Rid of Corpses – Project Zomboid

Have you found yourself surviving against all odds in zombie survival RPG Project Zomboid? If you’ve managed to hold down a base and fend off your hungry foes chances are you have a lot of bodies piling up around your base. I am here to teach you a few methods of getting rid of corpses in Project Zomboid to make your base a lot cleaner! Along with being an eyesore, corpses have an affect on the character’s mental health and emotions so getting rid of them is very important.

Different Ways to Remove Corpses

There are many different options that the player has for removing corpses in Project Zomboid. Some of these will require you to have other special items in your inventory to use and other methods will involve changing the world settings in the game. One of the easiest ways to get rid of a lot of corpses is to burn them. We will go over all of the ways that you can get rid of corpses.

How to Burn Corpses in Project Zomboid

The best way to burn a lot of corpses at one time is to build yourself a campfire somewhere. Once you have placed the campfire down on the ground don’t light it yet. Collect up all of the corpses in the area you want to get rid of and place them on a pile on top of the fire. Once you have them all on top, you can simply light the fire to have the fire spread through all of the zombie corpses.

Step 1: Build up a campfire in a place where fire won’t spread and damage too many things in the world like a road surface.

Build up that fire

Once you have built up a campfire in a safe place you can start to place all of the corpses on top of it. Be aware that all of the corpses have to be pretty close together on top of the fireplace otherwise the fire will not spread between them. Once you have gathered them all together, right-click on the fire to bring up the menu and select the option to light the fire.

Now you simply have to wait a while for the fire to spread. The warmth and sound of the fire may also attract other zombies to the area so watch out for that. Zombies that run over a campfire will also catch fire and can spread that fire across the amp, so make sure not to lure any flaming zombies to your flammable base. After a while all of the corpses should have burnt down.

Now there may be some bodies left over that the campfire didn’t quite get. If there are still some left over you can pick them up and put them on top of the fire once again. You always have a source of fuel with the clothes off of their backs.

Burning Corpses With a Gasoline Can

You can also use gasoline to quickly light up your enemies’ bodies. You can throw them all in a pile and burn the pile with gasoline. Grab a can that has at least 1 unit of gasoline in it and equip it into the primary hand. Now, grab a lighter and equip that as your secondary item. With these two items equipped, right-click the corpse that you want to remove and select the burn corpse option.

Digging Graves For The Bodies

If you have found yourself a shovel in Project Zomboid there is another method you can use to get rid of corpses in the game. By equipping the shovel and right-clicking on a piece of grass or dirt, you are given the option to dig a grave.

You’ll need to find a shovel before you can dig graves

Once you have one in your inventory the option will show up. Now, select the area you want the grave to be. The character will have to manually go over to the area and dig the grave but you can speed up this process by speeding up the in-game time. Once you have an area, go and grab the corpse you want to bury.

Now, with the corpse in your character’s inventory, walk over to the grave that you have dug. If you open up the interaction menu on the grave by pressing the right-click, you will see an option to Bury Corpse. You can bury a total of 5 corpses in each grave in Project Zomboid, which only really makes it a good idea for if you have a small amount of bodies to get rid of.

This method is inferior to burning corpses as if also takes up two tiles of the map which cannot be built on anymore.

Change Settings to Automatically Despawn Corpses

One of the settings when creating a game with a custom sandbox, allows the player to decide how long it will take corpses to be removed from the world. By default, this is set to 216 in-game hours across all difficulty settings and starts in the game. If you go to custom sandbox, under the ‘Meta’ tab you will find the option which is called “Time before Corpse Removal”.

Burn or dig no more

This value is the number of in-game hours it takes for a corpse to disappear from the game entirely. Be careful, if you set this number really low, but one of the corpses has something you really want to loot from it, such as a watch or bag, then all of the equipped items will disappear along with the corpse.

That was my tips for getting rid of corpses in Project Zomboid. Build 41 is out and we are absolutely loving it. With the inclusion of features like the exercise system, I’m really excited for what the future of Project Zomboid is going to look like! Until next time survivors.
