One of the furniture pieces available for the player to build is the sign. We will show you everything you need to do in order to unlock the sign, build the sign and show you some of the many uses for the sign in Valheim. Whether it is used around the base or as a way of finding different locations.
What is a Sign?
A sign is one of the furniture pieces that the player can build in Valheim. It looks like a small piece of rectangular timber that has three dots on it by default. The player can use their keyboard to write whatever they wish onto a sign in the game.
The sign item is a part of the furniture set available in the base game. Once the player has found all of the items required to craft a sign, the item will be unlocked. By interacting with the sign (default E key) the player can type whatever message they would like. The maximum character limit for the sign is 40 characters. This includes any spaces or punctuation marks.
How to Craft a Sign
The sign, along with other pieces of furniture in Valheim is crafted using a wooden hammer. Once the wooden hammer is crafted and all of the materials needed to build a sign have been acquired the furniture piece will be unlocked and available to build.
The materials required in order to craft the sign are:
- 2 Wood
- 1 Coal
- You must be in range of a workbench
With the hammer equipped press the right-mouse button in order to build up the hammer’s build menu. Then go over to the furniture tab where you will find the sign furniture piece. The sign only has only side that will display text so if you cannot see the three black dots on your side of the sign when attaching it to a wall, spin the item around using the mouse scroll wheel.
Simply click once you are happy with the placement of the sign in order to place it down. After the sign is placed you can write text onto it.
How to Write on the Sign in Valheim
Writing text onto the sign is very simple. Once you have placed down the sign you can edit it as many times as you want, so don’t worry if you’ve made a typo or would like to change the display text later.
Look at the sign and press the E key in order to interact with it. If this key doesn’t work check your key bindings in the options menu and see which key is set to “Use”. Once you interact with the sign a text box will appear on the screen asking you to ‘Enter Text” and you can type whatever you’d like into the box. Press enter when you are happy with the text on the sign and it will appear!
Keep in mind that whilst all text will be displayed in capital letters when visually looking at the sign in-game, when the player looks over the sign the original text will be displayed on the UI with any punctuation. If you’d like to change what the sign says later on, you can repeat the steps in order to write something new.
Players using a controller to play Valheim will have to use a keyboard in order to enter text onto a sign.
Uses For the Sign
There are multiple different uses for the sign in Valheim. What may seem like a very simple non-useful furniture item in the game can turn into a big game-changer for labeling, storage and finding your way around in general. Some of the uses and how you can implement them in your Valheim world include:
Labeling Storage Boxes
You can use signs to show exactly what is to be stored in different chests in your base. Walking around looking into every chest to find what you need can be very time-consuming and frustrating in Valheim. Having a nice layout with chests labelled as to what is in them can help reduce clutter and keep your items organized!
You don’t just have to use this for chests! you can label different buildings or different beds for your clan.
Create Signposts to Find Your Way Around
By getting creative with some wooden poles and some angled signs, you can create signposts which will tell you the direction of different points of interest. Perhaps you’ve made a path to a silver or iron source already to follow with a cart. If you’re got many forks in the road, signposts can quickly tell you in what direction you have to go! This one works great with large bases as well.
Using Signs as Decoration
By writing whatever you wish on signs you can decorate your base with different create signs and slogans. Check out the classic Live Laugh love sign created in the image above using 3 different signs. When you just want to add that feminine touch to the game.
There are many different applications for this including providing menu prices for your makeshift mead bar, writing other quotes across the walls or leaving messages for your friends to find when they log into the game. You could even have a room with battle plans written on signs, or a checklist on things you want to get done around the base.
