How to Build Stone Walls in Going Medieval

One of the most prominent features of the medieval times is the castles. With their huge towers and large stone gates, it’s no wonder when colony builder Going Medieval came along you would immediately want to build a large castle. With the Z level building system allowing players to build high and mighty structures, building castles is also possible here.

This guide will show you what you need to do in order to build with stone in Going Medieval.

How to Build With Stone in Going Medieval

In short:

  • Open up the BASE building menu with F1
  • Select the type of item you want (e.g wooden wall)
  • Selecting an item will open a new menu which will allow you to build different variants
  • Select the limestone variant
  • Place down the blueprint and wait for your settlers to build the stone structures

Even before you have researched anything you are able to start building things with limestone. Although this isn’t the strongest type of stone you are able to build with it will certainly be stronger than clay or wood walls. To build walls with regular limestone, open up the base building menu. Now, find the wall object. This may even be called wooden wall at this point but that is okay for now, just select it.

Now that this is selected, a menu will appear which allows you to change which type of material you are using to build the wall. In this menu, you can select the variant of wall you’d like. In this case, we are going to select the Limestone wall. As you can see, you will need 5 limestone for each piece of wall you wish to create.

Some objects have multiple variants with different materials

This option will only become available once your colony has found some limestone. You can get limestone by mining into most mountains and ground levels. You can see raw limestone on the ground in the image above. Simply designate the area to be mined by your settlers and you will receive raw stone.

Although this will have that classic old-school castle feel, you should consider researching how to make better stone structure with the information below. The guide will show you how to make actual limestone block buildings.

How to Unlock Stone Block Building in Going Medieval

To being with, your colony will be small. You will only be able to build with some basic materials like wood and clay. This is not forever! Through research you will be able to unlock many different building types, materials and different furniture. Before you can build with stone blocks as opposed to raw stone, you will also have to unlock it through research.

This guide will show you which research to unlock to build with stone. If you want to know how the research system works in full check out this Going Medieval Research Guide.

To unlock building with stone you will have to create a basic research table. Once you have this table a new menu will appear called the research menu. You will see this at the top of the UI between MANAGE and REGION. Open up this menu and find the Stone Block Cutting research item. (See the image below.)

You can make chronicles for research at the basic research table

As you can see, this research is pretty early on in the menu. You will only need 35 chronicle in total to research and unlock this. By researching stone block cutting, you will unlock the Stonemason’s bench and the ability to make limestone blocks.

How to Make Stone Blocks for Building

Now that you’ve unlocked the ability to make and build with stone, you will have to create your building material. We will start by placing down a Stonemason’s Bench. This is where your settlers will create building blocks from raw stone. Open up the Production building menu by pressing the F2 key, or selecting the icon from the bottom left of the UI. Now, find the Stonemason’s bench in this menu. There is only one variant of this bench and it will require 80 wood to create.

Try to place the stonemason’s bench indoors as there will be a production speed penalty if left outside

It is best to build this inside as if the facility is outside, there will be a penalty to the speed of the job. In the image above, I am planning to create my room around it anyway. Once the blueprint is placed down a settler assigned to building will come and create it. Now that we have created the bench, we can start to make limestone bricks.

Creating Limestone Bricks

To create limestone bricks, select your freshly built Stonemason’s Bench. This will open up the production menu for this item. Here you should only find one item available, the Limestone Brick. Select the limestone brick to add it to the production queue.

Once you have selected the small brick icon you will see the job appear in the production queue area. Here, you are able to adjust how many limestone bricks you would like to create. To change the amount, select the drop-down menu seen in the production queue area. There are three options for quantity; Forever, Amount and ‘Until You Have’.

You will have to add the Limestone Brick job to the production queue before your settlers will start making blocks
  • Amount: A fixed amount will be made then production will be halted
  • Until You Have: Your stonemason will keep a certain number of bricks in the storage of your colony
  • Forever: Bricks will br created forever as long as there is raw ingredients available

Decide how many blocks you’d like to create and the job will be there now. When it becomes a priority, one of your settlers will come and create these limestone bricks. The speed at which they can be created depends on what type of room the table is in. As creating bricks is a non-skilled task, settlers can’t really get better at it. That being said, some settlers will have a better global work speed depending on their background, traits and injuries.

Building with Limestone Bricks

Now that production has started with the limestone bricks you are able to start building! A new option will appear in the building menus for you. Now when you are deciding to build new walls, you should see another variant of wall. This is the Limestone Block wall. These walls are considerably stronger that the regular limestone walls. With the hit-points going from 300 to 800. Plus personally, I think they look a lot better.

Many other pieces like furniture, roofs and others have stone variants as well. Check out all of the building pieces in the game and see what types of items can have beautiful stone counter-parts.
