To split item stacks in Valheim you just open up your inventory with the Tab Key. Hover over the item stack that you would like to split and hold Left Shift and click on the stack of items you would like to split. A slider will appear allowing you to choose the amount of the item you’d like to separate.
What is Splitting Stacks?
Players unfamiliar with survival games such as Minecraft and Rust may not understand what the term split stack even means. A stack of items is an amount of items greater than 1 that is stored either in the players inventory or in a storage unit. Most games allow multiples of identical items to be stacked on top of each other otherwise the inventory would look like a total mess.
Splitting the stack refers to the act of taking a certain amount of items off the pile of items in the inventory. Once you have split a certain amount of the items from the rest of the stack you can move it wherever you would like.
Why Do You Need to Split Stacks?
There are many reason that players may want to split up stacks of items that they are carrying. One of the reasons might be the total item weight. In Valheim each individual item has it’s own weight value. The player can only carry a certain amount of items before they become encumbered and cannot move. If the player is encumbered they will not be able to regenerate stamina at all and cannot sprint.
By splitting a stack of large items and taking them out of the players’ inventory they will be able to lower the total carrying weight of their inventory and continue on their journey.
You may also want to split up the stack of items to share your items with a friend. Valheim is a co-operative game at it’s heart. By splitting item stacks and dragging the contents out of your inventory, you are able to share items with a friend. Items that are thrown out of your inventory will not be automatically picked up by your character like other items found in the world.
Using the Split Stack Slider
When you hover over an item stack and press Left Shift + Left click, you will open up the split stack slider. The amount that you choose on this slider will be the amount that is selected and can be moved wherever you wish with the mouse. The remaining amount that you haven’t taken will remain in the stack where you decided to split from, whether that was in a chest or in your inventory.
To change the slider, grab the yellow dot with the mouse and drag your mouse left or right to change the amount of that item you are going to stack. Left being the lowest amount and right being the full stack. Once you are happy with the amount of the item you want to split press the OK button on the bottom right of the UI.
Now that amount of the items will be selected and can be moved wherever you wish to take it.
