How to Siphon Gas in Project Zomboid – Build 41

Project Zomboid is a survival RPG which features a large open world. In order to get everything you need to survive you will have to traverse the map, going from place to place finding the supplies you need. If you plan on exploring the larger areas of the map, it will be beneficial to make use of a vehicle.

There are many things to take into account with a vehicle in Project Zomboid. First, you’ll need one in good condition. You will also either need a key for the vehicle, or the ability to hotwire vehicles. Once you have an operable vehicle, you will also need some gas to run it.

Luckily in Project Zomboid, you are able to siphon gas from cars. This is great as even older cars that are in bad condition can be of use to the player. This guide will show you how to siphon gas from vehicles in Project Zomboid and get your own vehicle up and running!

Finding a Gas Can to Siphon With

Before you are able to go around grabbing gas from any vehicle, you will need something to store it in. In Project Zomboid there is an item called a gas can.

With this item you can store and siphon gas from vehicles. The item is fairly common in Project Zomboid so you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding one. Some specific places you can commonly find a gas container as loot are:

  • In the boot/back of vehicles: Once you have access to the drivers seat of a vehicle, you can unlock the rest of the car, including the back. This area can be looted like any container and has a good chance to spawn a gas can.
  • Inside Garages and Sheds: A lot of the fancier homes have a car garage built next to them or possibly a shed next to the house. These are also great places to find a gas can.
  • At Gas Stations: The absolute best place to go searching for a gas can. Basically any shelf or container inside a gas station has a very good chance of spawning a gas can as loot. If you are having trouble anywhere else, you will find at least one in every gas station will almost certainty.

Equipping a Gas Can for Use

Once you have a gas can, you can use it by equipping it to one of your character’s hands. Then it can be used in the world. To equip the gas can, find it within your inventory and right-click on it. Select equip secondary and you will still be able to wield a one-handed weapon in the primary hand.

Now that we have a gas can, we can use it to siphon gas from a vehicle. As aforementioned, you’ll have to equip the gas can into one of your character’s free hands. Now that you have a gas can in your hands, you can simply walk up to any vehicle with gas inside it to siphon the fuel.

Right-click on the car that you want to siphon to bring up the interaction menu. Now, select the option which reads Siphon Gasoline. Your character will now move to where the gas is located on the car automatically and start to take gasoline from the car.

You won’t need the key of the vehicle to siphon its sweet gasoline

Note that not every car located in the game will have gasoline in them. In fact, it is not common at all for vehicles in the game to have a good amount of gasoline still stored in them. The good part about siphoning gasoline from cars is that you can still take something good from destroyed cars.

You don’t even need the key to be able to siphon gasoline from cars either, simply walk up to them with can in hand and start sucking. You can hover your mouse over the gas can in your inventory to see how much gas is currently in the can.

Adding Gasoline to Car After Siphoning

Now that you have that sweet gasoline siphoned straight from another car, what are you going to do with it? Well, pour it into your car of course! Luckily this is very easy to do. Once you have the gasoline move over to the vehicle you want to pour it in to.

All you have to do now is right-click on your own car to bring up the interaction menu. Now, move down to the option Add Gasoline and select it. Your character will automatically move to wherever the fuel pipe is on the car and start refilling.

Once you have the gas, use it to fuel up your own car or generator!

Your character will add fuel from the car until either the car is full of fuel or the gas can is empty. You can also cancel the animation mid-way to only put a certain amount of fuel in. There is no meter showing how much is going in however, so you will have to cancel and check the fuel level using the car’s Mechanics.

To see the fuel level of a car, you can hover your mouse over the fuel tank in the Mechanics screen.
