How to Farm in Cryofall | Farming Guide

One of the best ways of sustaining yourself in Cryofall is by farming. Through farming, the player can grow their own crops to eat in the game. Farming, like other mechanics in the game can be a little confusing to figure out at first. This guide will show you how to get started on farming in Cryofall. Sustain yourself with some self-grown crops!

How to Unlock Farming

Like all other objects, you’ll first have to unlock the ability to farm before you can get started growing. Cryofall has a technologies system where you spend learning points to unlock new objects and abilities. This is no different in farming. If you open up the technologies menu by selecting it from the top of the UI you will see a bunch of different sections. You can also press G to open up this menu. You should be open at tier 1 technologies by default. If not, select it from the top of this menu.

Here, you can see the section in tier 1 technologies which is called farming. This is where you will learn how to make your first farming structures and equipment. Select the farming section and here you will see the first things you can learn in the farming skill. This will include a farming table, plot of land to grow crops and some seeds. Farming will only go up to tier 3. This is currently the highest tier of farming related things that you can research. You can go through the different tiers and see what is coming up in the farming research. For now, we’ll just focus on the first tier of getting started farming.

How to Find Seeds for Farming

This is the one where a lot of players are going to get stuck. When you have learnt how to create seeds, you will be able to craft them at the farming workbench. The problem is that to make tomato seeds for example, you will need an actual tomato and some sand. Sand is relatively straightforward to collect, but where do you get the vegetables? You don’t. The answer is, you can actually forage seeds from the world already once you’ve unlocked the ability to craft them. You can find seeds in Cryofall around the world in the forest. Pull out little green plants and sometimes you will get some seeds. Some seed plants will have a specific look but they all look very similar to the little fiber plants as seen in the image below.

Pull out every little green plant you see as you might get some seeds!

Once you’ve found a seed for a type of plant once, you won’t need to forage for it again. Each plant will have multiple yields, meaning you will get more than one crop from your plant. Using the vegetables you receive from your harvest, you can create more seeds and thus, more plants! The trick is just finding the seeds to begin with!

How to Farm in Cryofall

Once we have researched all of the things we needs for farming and have found some seeds it’s time to get to work! You can plant crops by first building a farm plot. Make sure you have a toolbox in your inventory and open the construction menu by pressing the B key. You can also select the menu from the top of the UI. With the building menu open, go over to the tab which is called Food. Scroll down and select the farm plot. Keep in mind that once placed, the farm plot cannot be moved. Choose your spot carefully!

After you have selected the farm plot press the build button. Keep in mind you will need all of the materials listen in the building menu. The farm plot will be built instantly and won’t require you to add materials to it. Select an area where you would like to start growing crops. You should probably try to set up some source of water before you start growing crops. Keep in mind you won’t be able to use straight lake water for your crops.

Planting Seeds

Now that you have some farm plots laid out it’s time to start growing some plants! Grab your seeds out of whatever container you have them in and put them into the bar down the bottom. This is known as the quick bar. You can tell this apart from the rest of your inventory as every slot is numbered here. Drag the seeds you want to plant into any of these slots. Now, equip these seeds by pressing the corresponding number on your keyboard, or by simply clicking this icon with your mouse. With the seeds equipped, left-click on an empty plot to plant them. That’s it!

You officially have some crops! Now you’ll have to tend to them! There are a few other things to keep in mind when you are growing crops. you will need to regularly water the crops so they will not dry out.

Caring For Your Crops

You can craft yourself a watering can once you have learnt how to craft one in the research technologies. Go over to the farmer’s workbench and right-click to interact with it. Here you will be able to craft farm-related objects and items.

Craft a watering can to keep your crops watered

As you can see in the image above, I will be crafting a copper watering can. For now, any type of watering can you can craft will be good enough. That will come into play now. As you can probably imagine with the watering can, you will have to fill it up and water your crops with it. Unfortunately you cannot kill the water straight up from a lake.

You’ll have to first fill up a bottle with water and then put it into the copper water can. That being said, you can always fill a bottle up, boil the water and then put it into the watering can. To fill up a watering can, either take it to a well and click on the well or, refill it using bottles of water by equipping the watering can and pressing the R key. This will empty the bottle of water straight into the can. Each bottle of water will fill 3 spaces in the watering can. The copper watering can has 6 units of space by default allowing 6 plant areas to be watered.

Watering Crops

With water in your can it is now time to feed those plants! You simply have to equip the watering can by dragging it into the quickbar. Select it with the mouse or corresponding number to equip it. Now, move your character over to the crops which you have planted and press the left mouse button. Your character will not water the crops. Keeping crops watered is not essential to farming in Cryofall. That being said, watering your crops and keeping them watered will speed up the time it takes them to grow. In Cryofall watering your crops currently speeds up the growing time by 100%. Or, halving the time it takes for them to be fully grown.

Mulch and Fertilizer

You can also speed up the crop growing process by adding mulch and eventually fertilizer to your crops. The mulchbox is one of the items that can be created in the first tier of farming. To use the mulch box and get mulch from this, simply throw random organic matter into the input part. The mulch box will slowly decompose into a nice source of fertilizer for your crops. If you are unsure if your item can go in the mulch box hold it in your inventory with the mulch box menu open. If you can’t put the selected item in the mulch bin then the input area will be red. Otherwise you can drag unwanted organic items into here.

Throw unwanted organic matter into the mulch box to make mulch

One of my favorite things to throw into the mulch box is the rot. As there isn’t really any use for it and all food eventually spoils to rot, the mulch box is a great place to turn it into something useful. I’m sure you’ve accumulated some rot from spoiled food already or by killing and looting a snail. Now you have a use for it! The more things you throw in the mulch box to compost the quicker you will get some mulch. It will accumulate in the output area for you to take whenever you want.

To apply the mulch to a crop, simply equip it the same way you did with the watering can. Now, you can use the mulch on one of your crops. Applying mulch to your crops will speed the process up by another 100%. Both the mulch and the crops effects will last for one hour in total. Then they can be re-applied. You can only have 1 unit of mulch on a crop at a time.
